I learned that as the Smith family moved to Palmyra, there was a huge snow storm and Joseph became separated from the family and though he would surely die, but he was found by a stranger who carried him into town and saved his life...
I also realized that as Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden, there wasn't dinner waiting for them somewhere...that must have been a stark realization, the actuality of finding food in the "lone and dreary world." I thought about that for awhile today...then I ate some nachos...
I learned that Oscar can and will have diarrhea anywhere...including sacrament meeting. I also learned that my favorite gospel doctrine lessons are by Mo, and not by someone who sits in a chair, doesn't open the scriptures of the lesson manual one single time, and continually plays "devil's advocate" for a full hour.
Don't worry...the church is still true.
But, the choir did perform a lovely piece in sacrament meeting, and that was the highlight for me.
We went to Adam and Kristy's home for a spaghetti dinner this afternoon. Our ward meets at 9:00 AM and they meet at 3:30 PM, so dinner always has to take place somewhere in between when we get together. I guess I also learned Kristy is a great cook...but I already knew that.
I learned that you can't stop a group of late-arriving people from taking over the bench even when the lady next to you is saving seats for her three sacrament passing sons--they are in too much of a hurry to find a seat and not call attention to themselves. We had a sacrament meeting talk about prayer where it was compared to using a cell phone...the analogy went on for ten minutes...it was quite interesting. Keep those phones turned on and keep them with you!
I learned, yesterday--and still remember (imagine that) that sometimes I CAN play the piano while people sing. I also learned that I really feel passionately about Sign Language and have a deeply rooted desire from who knows where to be a part of it. I'm sure I learned something about the gospel too. Oh, Clark spoke on the Atonement and I re-learned how much I love him and that he is a really good speaker and teacher.
sunday? i learned...um... three minutes later and i still cant think of anything really pertanent. but i remeber being reminded that the church is run by people who are anyhthing but right all the time and most cant seem to make the distinction between what they want the answer to be and the spirrit talking to them. thank heavens the gospel is true, even if the church is kinda funny somtimes. i hope this doesnt sound apostate. its a real testimony builder if understood in the right light. my stake had a neat musical fireside... a definate highlight.
Spencer, If I had to base the truthfulness of the gospel on the human beings "running the (local) show" (ie. afore-mentioned gospel doctrine teacher/devil's advocate) my testimony would be in serious jeopardy. Having opinions and making judgment calls makes you human...not apostate. :)
I learned that if you don't arrive in time for Sunday School in our ward, then you miss out on a bench for sacrament meeting. Sitting on metal chairs in the cultural hall with Jacob and Matthew is the equivalent of inviting a herd of elephants to sit quietly in the back. I have also learned that raisins, goldfish crackers, and cheerios are a bad choice for meetings whereas pretzels, fruit snacks and cheese sticks are excellent choices. We actually dumped an entire bread tray on the floor a couple of Sundays ago...we were grateful it wasn't the water tray. And 2 Sundays ago, Jake made a run for the pulpit with Chris frantically chasing him in front of the entire congregation. Seconds after Chris took him out Hannah started wailing at the top of her lungs so I took her and Matthew out but as soon as we hit the foyer, Matthew took off running for the exit door where he promptly caught one of his fingers caught. The irony was when I met Chris and told him to give me the car keys because I was going home and it took us five minutes to get the message straight between us because the kids were all crying so loud. So I'm sorry, I'm struggling with what the spiritual part of this questions was supposed to be??
You all make my sacrament meetings seem so dull as I sit alone staring at the Bishop on the stand. ITs allowed since he is my husband. Actually Sunday I sat in the choir seats and listened to him give a talk since it was ward conference and he did an excellent job MOM in OREM
