Now I understand...

People, I finally understand why our beloved Mother has an affinity for "collecting" so many pens and pencils. I have started locking the door to the office because my "supplies" keep mysteriously disappearing at the little hands of my offspring. So often I open my desk drawer to retrieve a writing utensil and there is nary a pen or pencil to be found. So several times a year I purchase entire packages of pens and pencils to replenish my supply. Perhaps I should think about adding a small family of scorpions to the drawer to deter any further break-ins...Abby, wanna hook me up with some tiny poisonous friends from NV?
So that's it...our Mother is simply compensating for the lack of writing utensil respect that we, her children inflicted upon her for oh, so many years.
Collect on Mo, collect on.
I think that maybe we need to see some pictures of your pens and pencils, organized by brand and color/pattern. It would make me very happy.

AMEN, sistah.

I can't tell you how many flashbacks to my childhood I've had recently as these words have escaped my mouth:

"Stay out of MOM'S stuff! It's MY stuff!"

I'm sorry, Mom for all of things I ever stole from you. I am really, truly sorry and I hope you can forgive me. I was sneaky as a kid. It must have made you feel insane.

And now I have a daughter who is making sure Karma does its thing.

It makes me laugh because who did we think we were anyway? We just helped ourselves, didn't we? But I do remember the Dove ice cream bars were sacred...that and there were too few in a box for her not to notice one missing. Sorry, Mo. I wish I could say I don't help myself to your stuff anymore, but we both know I'd be lying!

You are all forgiven. What you didn't realize is that it was really a carefully crafted plan to encourage creativity in my offspring, and it worked. This reminds me of the time Abby and I bundled up several dozen of my "extra pens" and sent them to the Albertsons store where she used to work because when she was there she could never find a pen to write with. I never heard from them...hmmm. You were absolutely right about the Dove ice cream bars, Abs. There had to be a limit to what I would tolerate in thievery and that was where I drew the line, dang it!

Dad just reminded me (after I read this blog entry to him) that at one time he had a sign-out sheet in his desk drawer for when a child wanted to use something. It must have worked because he pulled out a ruler from that time (what, maybe 10 or 12 years old) that still has a sticker on it reading: "Dad's ruler. Do not take, borrow, etc. Leave in my drawer!" Maybe that explains why you kept "borrowing" my stuff! I had no sign out sheets or stickers!

Bless Dad's heart...he knew that we would take it regardless so he created a way to keep us honest. I'm not sure it worked but I do remember checking out his red felt tipped pen on occasion!

I'm glad that mom was the store. She told me she likes being the store. I like that mom is still the store.
